BALI UNMASKED – TOPENG WORKSHOPS AND PERFORMANCE
This is a rare opportunity to learn the techniques of Topeng, a unique and ancient theatre form. Come and explore Topeng’s fascinating combination of storytelling, mask work, dance and physical characterisation, as well as gain a deeper understanding of Topeng’s role in Balinese culture and society. The course is suitable for actors, dancers, storytellers, circus performers and students of performance. Workshops will be led by 3 visiting Balinese experts (pictured below) with contextual learning sessions by UK-based practitioners.

Hosted at Dartington College of Arts, which is set on the beautiful Dartington Estate, near Totnes, Devon.
Ida Bagus Alit (centre) is a lifelong performer of Topeng, who has skills, insights and innate knowledge of this extraordinary form of performance that few in the world possess.
"Ida Bagus Alit is a strong, intuitive teacher, totally committed to transferring knowledge of the sacred dances and sharing his passion for the Balinese traditions of mask-making and performance"
